Schumer describes Trump’s proposal to send ICE agents to US airports as ‘rash’

Trump makes fun of Schumer on Truth Social for his near mistake about ICE on the Senate floor

Schumer Critiques Trump’s Plan for ICE at Airports

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer from New York expressed strong disapproval on Sunday regarding President Donald Trump’s initiative to deploy U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports across the country.

During his remarks on the Senate floor, Schumer described Trump’s move as “impulsive,” suggesting it could further complicate existing airport issues. “Today, Donald Trump and [Tom] Homan announced that ICE officers will be deployed to the airport starting Monday. This is really disturbing. Untrained ICE agents are hiding in airports and causing problems everywhere. It’s definitely going to make the airport mess even worse,” Schumer said.

He added, “Nobody trusts ICE officers. They’re not trained. They don’t know what it’s like to be a TSA officer and do what they’re supposed to do. The real problem here is the lack of a plan for using these ICE agents. Trump says send them there, and Homan admits they’re still figuring things out less than a day later. What is this? We know what it is. This is another impulsive action by Donald Trump.”

Schumer went on to criticize the chaotic decision-making within Trump’s administration, suggesting that some people working for him may have talent but are often rushed into executing “stupid plans.”

This latest decision regarding ICE comes in the midst of ongoing disputes between Trump and Democrats over funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Schumer and his allies have been reluctant to approve funding without addressing immigration enforcement reform. Meanwhile, issues such as unpaid salaries for airport employees persist, with some not having received a paycheck for over a month.

Before this news, President Trump had previously indicated the possibility of sending ICE agents to airports in order to pressure Democrats to finalize a deal to fund DHS.

There have been reports of significant employee absenteeism at various airports, with over 400 TSA workers quitting their positions. Trump’s deployment of ICE is framed by him as a necessary action to support TSA agents, whom he described as doing their jobs amid challenges posed by Democrats. He speculated that Democrats would likely criticize ICE’s actions regardless of their effectiveness.
