Swalwell criticizes Trump for lack of results in Putin meeting: ‘Art of no deal’

Swalwell hits Trump for no progress in Putin meeting: 'Art of no deal'

Swalwell Critiques Trump After Putin Summit

Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif) expressed his disappointment on Friday regarding President Trump’s departure from the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting the absence of a ceasefire agreement.

Swalwell, known for his critical stance towards Trump, implied that the administration’s approach to Russia might be too lenient, especially with recent sanctions being postponed.

He remarked, “Being lenient with Russia could set a precedent. If China made a move on Taiwan, it might mirror the approach with China, especially if there were no European allies involved.” He added that this could lead to abandoning Ukraine in favor of aligning with China, comments made during his appearance on MSNBC.

Swalwell also emphasized, “Today, Donald Trump has showcased a masterclass in not reaching agreements.”

The California Democrat’s remarks arise amidst Trump’s controversial stance on welcoming Putin, despite ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions on Russian trade associates. However, Trump stated on Friday that he would walk away from negotiations if Putin offered an unsatisfactory deal, warning of “serious consequences” should peace talks not progress.

“Trump hinted at business opportunities that might arise, but honestly, I don’t get it. What can we actually gain from Russia?” Swalwell questioned.

He further explained that even during favorable times, Russia hasn’t been a significant trading partner, which suggests a disconnect in Trump’s optimism about leveraging relations.

Additionally, earlier on Friday, Swalwell took to social media to mock Trump, calling him “Dummy Donald,” after the president’s interview with Fox News, where Trump expressed the need to “reconsider” if the summit turned out to be unfavorable.

While Trump described the meeting as “productive,” he did not share substantial details about what was discussed, following a nearly three-hour closed-door meeting with Putin. A press conference after the summit did not allow media inquiries into the specifics.

Looking ahead, Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky at the White House on Monday, stating that it would ultimately be Ukraine’s responsibility to secure a peace agreement with Russian leaders, possibly involving territorial concessions.
