Arrest Made in Mississippi Woman’s Homicide Case
Authorities in Mississippi have apprehended a 51-year-old man in connection with the murder of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four who was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned house last month. This charge followed an official ruling of homicide after her death generated significant media focus and discussions online, particularly given Mississippi’s troubling history with racial violence.
The suspect, Jarques Ratliff, a Black resident of Jackson, had a previous personal relationship with Fortune. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney revealed at a news conference that Ratliff was arrested without any resistance while walking along Capitol Street. This happened soon after the police executed search warrants at related locations. Chief Brackney mentioned that while this arrest represents a crucial development, the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests may occur as detectives pursue additional leads.
Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised concerns about “racial terror” and “modern-day lynchings” in the United States, calling on the Department of Justice to investigate similar hanging deaths among Black Americans.
Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 in the backyard of a vacant home in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance in Jackson. In the weeks that followed, investigators conducted interviews with around 15 people and assessed various physical evidence. However, they could only proceed with arrest warrants after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office officially classified her death as a homicide, which occurred late Thursday. Once that determination was made, law enforcement quickly moved to secure and carry out search warrants along with Ratliff’s arrest warrant.
Chief Brackney acknowledged the public’s intense interest in the case, understanding the skepticism considering the state’s past. However, she emphasized that their work is based solely on verifiable evidence rather than external speculation, stating that their public comments are strictly backed by forensic facts.
In her remarks, she also clarified that authorities had not previously identified any persons of interest before Ratliff’s arrest, directly countering social media claims that named a different suspect.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed gratitude for the detectives’ work, noting that the family was informed quickly about both the homicide ruling and Ratliff’s arrest. She firmly believes her daughter did not die by suicide, commenting that Fortune would not have taken her own life.
Fortune was said to have grown up in Kentucky, showing promise as a cross-country runner and relying on strong religious beliefs. In recent years, she faced challenges, including homelessness, but was working towards starting a cleaning business in an effort to stabilize her life prior to her tragic death.
Ratliff is currently being held at the Hinds County Detention Center, facing a murder charge. He is expected to appear in Jackson Municipal Court, where formal charges will be presented and bond conditions established. Police have not yet disclosed the specific evidence linking Ratliff to the crime scene or elaborated on his relationship with Fortune as the investigation continues, with the possibility of more arrests on the horizon.
