I.R.S. announced Acceptance of 2023 tax returns will officially begin on Monday, January 29th.
However, while formal processing will not begin until that date, filers should not wait to start preparing their returns, officials said. Most companies offering tax preparation services already have forms available for the 2023 tax year and simply hold them until the IRS is ready to begin processing them.
The agency announced that IRS Free File for taxpayers making less than $79,000 a year will also be available on IRS.gov starting January 12. However, the new IRS Direct File pilot Eligible taxpayers will be able to file their taxes directly with the IRS online for free, but it won't be fully rolled out until mid-March.
IRS Commissioner Danny Wuerffel said, “As our transformation efforts take hold, taxpayers will continue to see significant improvements in IRS operations this coming filing season.” Stated. “IRS employees are working hard to ensure that new funds are used to help taxpayers by making the process of preparing and filing taxes easier.”
Among the improvements touted by the agency are: Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC); more help available for Toll-free hotlineenhanced customer callback functionality designed to significantly reduce wait times.
The agency said it expects more than 128.7 million individual tax returns to be filed by the April 15 tax deadline this year.
