Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Two Teen Lives in New Jersey
In a tragic incident in Cranford, New Jersey, two teenage girls lost their lives on Monday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, who is reportedly accused of stalking one of them.
Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, both 17 and students at Cranford High School, were riding their Ebikes together around 5:30 PM when the incident occurred. Unfortunately, they succumbed to their injuries later in the hospital.
Authorities apprehended a 17-year-old boy from nearby Garwood, shortly after he crashed near the scene of the accident. He faces two counts of first-degree murder, although his name has not been released by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
Friends have indicated that the alleged perpetrator had been stalking one of the girls, prompting her to file restraining orders against him. “She filed a complaint, but nothing was done,” shared her friend, Tammy Carvajal, expressing the profound tragedy of the situation.
Neighbors recounted that the suspect had parked outside the girl’s home for several months prior to the fatal incident. “He never stopped,” one neighbor stated, highlighting the unsettling nature of the stalking.
Details about which girl the driver was targeting remain unclear. Witnesses report that many in the community are struggling to process the aftermath of the incident, feeling unsettled in what used to be a peaceful neighborhood.
One resident described the moment, saying, “I only saw one girl initially. As I walked a bit further, I saw the other girl.” They added, “It’s just scary. There’s nothing in the world as scary as what I saw yesterday—I have children, and now it hits even closer to home.”
As for Maria and Isabella, friends described them as vibrant individuals. Maria was remembered as a kind soul with a talent for singing, while Isabella was noted for her fun-loving spirit. The loss of these two young lives has left a deep mark on the community.
