Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico garnered nearly 50% of his fundraising from outside Texas by the close of the first quarter of 2026. This contrasts with his Republican rival, who received about 25% from outside the state.
According to campaign finance records, Talarico raised around $8.5 million from February 12 to March 31. During this period, his national profile attracted significant donations, with approximately $4 million coming from states outside of Texas. In comparison, Republican candidate Ken Paxton managed to raise about $640,000 from Texas during the same timeframe, out of a total of roughly $850,000.
This funding gap underscores the growing national interest in Texas Senate races. Talarico is receiving substantial support from Democratic donors and executives beyond Texas, even as he emphasizes his Texas heritage and critiques outside interests. This situation could provide Democrats with a financial advantage in what’s expected to be a fiercely contested Senate race. Republicans may amplify concerns about Talarico’s campaign, which appears to be bolstered by liberal financial backers rather than local voters.
Notably, contributions from donors in New York and California exceeded $1.3 million to Talarico during the last six weeks of the first quarter, according to FEC records.
Despite positioning himself as a champion for working families in Texas, Talarico’s campaign has been funded significantly by out-of-state contributions. For instance, he claimed to be the only candidate not to have accepted any corporate PAC money, contrasting himself with opponents who have benefited from substantial donations from special interests.
Talarico’s campaign has received backing from executives at major companies, including Google and Apple, and has accepted contributions from lobbyists representing large corporations. While he has gained notable support from outside Texas, his fundraising efforts locally outshine Paxton’s, who has struggled to attract donor support following a contentious primary fight.
Additionally, Talarico’s campaign has been supported by Lone Star Rising PAC, a super PAC that reportedly raised considerable funds to assist him. However, it appears that much of this funding has also come from wealthy donors outside Texas, with only a small percentage originating from in-state sources.
