Sen. Cruz Faces Criticism for California Trip Amid Storm Warnings
Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has drawn criticism after being photographed boarding a flight to California, a trip he had arranged before a severe winter storm was forecasted to impact Texas this weekend.
The 55-year-old senator was seen getting up from his seat on a United Airlines flight that landed in California on Tuesday. Political commentator Thea Jordan Smith noted, “Senator Cruz was spotted on a plane heading to Laguna Beach as Texas prepares for an unusual ice threat and an arctic cold front.”
In response to the widely shared photo—viewed over 8 million times—Cruz’s office stated that this trip had been organized weeks in advance. “Senator Cruz is on a business trip that was scheduled before the storm warnings,” a spokesperson mentioned. He intends to return to Texas before the storm begins.
Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, remarked on the potential severity of the storm, which could spread from Texas to the Carolinas, leading to a catastrophic impact. Heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain are anticipated to hit Texas starting Friday, moving across the Midwest and toward the East Coast. Some areas may receive up to two feet of snow.
The senator’s trip drew backlash on social media, with users mocking him for seemingly abandoning Texas during a critical time. Comments ranged from jabs about his tendency to leave when it gets cold to questioning the effectiveness of his role during a crisis. One user sarcastically asked what he was expected to do—clear driveways.
Interestingly, some users highlighted other politicians’ travel during emergencies, like California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent trip to Switzerland while a storm approached Texas. The discussion raised questions about accountability and consistency among politicians during crises.
Critics recalled Cruz’s infamous trip to Cancun during a deadly winter storm in Texas back in 2021, suggesting a pattern of escaping harsh conditions. That incident had led to considerable backlash after Texas experienced severe power outages and critical hardships.
After that Cancun trip, Cruz admitted he regretted the decision as soon as he got on the plane, revealing that he was trying to accommodate his daughters, who were cold and lacking electricity at home.
Additionally, allegations of a similar pattern emerged when Cruz vacationed in Greece during catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country last summer, prompting further scrutiny.
As Texas prepares for a serious winter storm, the reactions to Cruz’s travel plans continue to unfold, reflecting the challenges and expectations faced by elected officials during emergencies.
