Trump Administration Targets Federal Grants for States with Inclusive Sex Education
The Trump administration has issued a warning to several states about potential funding cuts related to transgender information in sex education programs. Specifically, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is “notifying” 46 states, along with territories and Washington, D.C.
These states could face a loss of more than $81 million in federal grants, as reported by the Administration for Children and Families (ACF).
In a statement, HHS characterized this action as part of an ongoing effort to shield children from what they termed “delusional ideology.” They indicated that failure to comply with their guidelines could lead to the withdrawal or suspension of funding.
“Accountability is coming,” Deputy Chief Andrew Graujuan warned. He emphasized that federal funds would not support what he described as a harmful ideological agenda.
Graujuan also stated, “The Trump administration will ensure that Prep reflects Congressional intent, not a left priority.”
This warning comes shortly after HHS revoked California’s preparatory grant due to the state’s refusal to eliminate “gender ideological content” from their educational materials. The department claimed that such information exceeded the scope of the PREP approval law and lacked scientific backing.
In response, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) defended its curriculum, stating it was “medically accurate, comprehensive, and age-appropriate,” and previously approved by ACF as compliant with federal standards.
CDPH highlighted that its curriculum aligns with federal requirements, addressing various topics, including adolescent growth, body image, and healthy attitudes toward diversity.
The administration’s stance on transgender issues has been consistent, with an executive order on day one explicitly stating that the U.S. recognizes only two genders—male and female—and banning the promotion of “gender ideology.” They’ve also taken steps to restrict transgender minors, particularly transgender girls, from participating in women’s sports.
