Trump and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro discussed a potential meeting last week: report

Recently, President Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to discuss the potential of a meeting in the U.S., according to reports from The New York Times. While no concrete plans are in place for such a meeting, it would mark a notable first for a U.S. president and a Venezuelan leader widely recognized for authoritarian rule.

The phone call comes as Trump continues to issue strong statements regarding Venezuela, even teasing the idea of pursuing diplomatic avenues.

While Trump has shown some willingness for dialogue previously, the revelation that a discussion has taken place adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing situation.

The Trump administration has classified Maduro as an illegitimate leader tied to a drug-trafficking group known as the Cartel de los Soles, a claim that the Venezuelan government refutes. Many experts point to drug-related corruption in the Venezuelan government, although firm evidence of organized groups operating like traditional cartels remains elusive.

Since early September, the U.S. has been targeting suspected drug-smuggling vessels originating from Venezuela and other Latin American nations, actions that some, including academics and human rights advocates, describe as extrajudicial measures.

Recently, Trump reiterated his threat to attack land targets in Venezuela, suggesting that such military actions could begin soon.

Neither the White House nor communications representatives from Venezuela have responded to inquiries for comment on these developments.

Officials from the White House noted that Trump sees military action and diplomatic discussions regarding Venezuela as compatible rather than mutually exclusive. There has been a significant military buildup in the Caribbean, and covert CIA operations in Venezuela have been authorized by Trump.

According to reports, the U.S. is entering a new phase in operations related to Venezuela, which may involve implementing covert strategies.

Sources indicate that options being pondered include attempts to remove Maduro from power. Additionally, the Washington Post recently reported allegations that the U.S. killed survivors following an airstrike on a drug-smuggling vessel, raising serious questions regarding the legality of U.S. military actions in the region.
