“Based on the evidence obtained by the subcommittee, Liz Cheney could face significant trouble.'' The committee concluded that “a number of federal laws were likely violated by Liz Cheney; These violations should be investigated by the FBI,'' Trump posted on Truth Social earlier. Wednesday.
Her comments come as the House Executive Oversight Subcommittee, led by Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), on Tuesday called on the Justice Department to investigate Cheney's actions before President Trump retakes the White House. It came just hours after the interim report was released.
In the weeks before her June 2022 testimony, Cheney allegedly used the encrypted app Signal to exchange phone calls and text messages with then-President Trump's first-term aide Cassidy Hutchinson. It is said. But House Republicans have previously stressed that much of the “incriminating” information Cheney claimed to have learned was later proven to be false.
Nevertheless, it is still up in the air as to whether President Trump's nominee to lead the Justice Department will act on the committee's recommendations.
Chairman Loudermilk's report stated, “Evidence uncovered by the subcommittee shows that former Congresswoman Liz Cheney secretly communicated with and tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, without Hutchinson's attorney's knowledge.'' That has become clear.”
Loudermilk argued that the former Wyoming lawmaker's interactions with Hutchinson were illegal, “deviated from the legitimate functioning of legislative process, and are therefore not protected by the Speech and Discussion Clause.”
Hutchinson also testified publicly that when a Secret Service agent refused to give Trump a ride to the Capitol on the day of the protest, Trump became so furious that he “ran over the wheel.” He claimed to have been told that he had done so.
However, these claims were proven false by photographs from the day showing that Hutchinson had misidentified the vehicle he allegedly encountered. The driver later admitted that Hutchinson's testimony was false.
There is still debate as to whether her testimony was deliberately fabricated or simply a misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, Cheney spoke out on the matter Tuesday afternoon, accusing Loudermilk of “lies and defamatory allegations.” She is also reportedly on the list of people President Joe Biden will preemptively pardon before he leaves the White House.
