Trump criticizes Utah judge for holding up Charlie Kirk assassination case

Tyler Robinson’s Defense Advocates for 2029 Trial Start

In a recent appearance on ‘Fox & Friends First,’ attorney Alex Swoyer discussed the upcoming pretrial hearing in the murder case involving Charlie Kirk. Tyler Robinson, the defendant, is facing serious charges such as aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm in Utah County. Swoyer pointed out the contrasting timelines proposed by the prosecution and the defense, as Erika Kirk is pushing for a quicker trial date.

In a statement, President Donald Trump criticized the judge in the case for what he labeled a “terrible job.” He expressed frustration, saying the proceedings should conclude much sooner—within a month, not three years. Trump chastised the judge for prolonging the trial and, in doing so, disrespecting Charlie Kirk’s memory. His remarks came after Robinson’s defense suggested a trial could tentatively begin in 2029.

Robinson’s defense team argued in their court filing that the significant amount of unreviewed evidence and complexities surrounding jury selection warranted such a lengthy timeline. They emphasized that establishing a firm trial date at this stage could misrepresent the situation and potentially infringe on Robinson’s constitutional rights, particularly given the gravity of a death penalty case.

They elaborated, stating that handling a capital case brings unique responsibilities and complexities. The defense insisted they need ample time to evaluate evidence regarding both guilt and sentencing, making a premature trial date unrealistic.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, have expressed confidence that they will be ready for a trial by October 2027. Erika Kirk, seeking justice for her late husband, asked the court for the earliest possible trial date in 2027, calling the defense’s proposed timeline “grossly out of line” with similar cases.

She pointed out that every delay exacerbates the emotional toll on Charlie’s family, particularly affecting his two young children, who would be significantly older by the time of a verdict under the defense’s proposed schedule.

Robinson is set to appear in court again on Friday afternoon.
