Trump Extends Ceasefire with Iran
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran until the country can present a “unified offer,” citing a significant “deep rift” between the two nations.
The announcement was made through his Truth Social account after 4 PM ET.
“Given the Iranian government’s unexpected deep divisions, and at the request of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, we will hold off on attacks against Iran until their leaders propose a unified plan. I am directing the military to uphold the blockade and maintain readiness for other operations while we await these proposals. Thus, I intend to extend the ceasefire until discussions are concluded,” Trump stated.
This development came shortly after the planned visit by Vice President J.D. Vance to Islamabad for further peace talks was postponed. According to a source familiar with the situation, Tehran did not accept the U.S. negotiating position, leading to the delay.
Vance was supposed to depart for Pakistan’s capital on Tuesday morning, with negotiations slated to resume the following day, which also marks the expiration date of the current fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The official added that the diplomatic process has stalled due to Iran’s lack of response, but the visit has not been officially canceled.
If the Iranian negotiators respond favorably, travel could swiftly resume. U.S. officials are also looking for a clear sign that these negotiators possess the authority to finalize a deal.
During this period, CNN reported that Vance was at the White House while the talks were on hold, attending a meeting that included Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump had mentioned to Bloomberg on Monday that the two-week ceasefire would end Wednesday night ET and indicated it was “very unlikely” he would extend it if Iran did not comply with the agreement.
On Tuesday, during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box, he stated that the U.S. was ready to initiate bombing if there was no agreement by the deadline.
A reporter asked, “Does this mean we need at least the prospect of a deal today and tomorrow, or we’ll go back to bombing Iran?”
Trump responded, “Well, I’m expecting bombing because I think that’s a better attitude. But we’re ready. The troops are eager to come out. They’re really incredible.”
