Trump Celebrates Legislative Win as House Passes Budget
This week marked a notable achievement for President Donald Trump in his second term. He took to social media on Thursday to announce that “One, Big, Beautifulville” had successfully passed through the House of Representatives.
The House, under Republican control, passed Trump’s wide-ranging tax and spending cut plan by a slim margin. This package aligns with many of the president’s key campaign promises regarding tax cuts, immigration, defense, energy, and managing national debt.
Interestingly, just days before this vote, two polls suggested the president’s approval ratings were struggling. A national survey from Marquette Law School showed a 46% disapproval rate, while a Reuters/Ipsos poll indicated a 50% disapproval as well.
Despite these numbers, Trump has been actively pushing for executive powers in his current term, aiming to challenge longstanding government policies and significantly cut the federal workforce through various executive actions—issues he attributes to his first term experiences.
At the start of his second administration, Trump enjoyed favorable numbers, but they began to decline shortly after his inauguration in late January.
Meanwhile, some issues like border security and immigration, which were central to Trump’s successful bid to return to office, continue to show mixed reception. Poll results indicate a 56% approval rate for border security and 50% for immigration, yet his actions have drawn controversy and legal challenges that seem to outweigh these approvals.
Daron Shaw, a member of the Fox News Decision team, mentioned that immigration is beginning to lose its prominence as a key issue for voters. He expressed that while Republicans still hold a favorable view, Democrats and independents are increasingly focused on economic issues instead.
As for Trump’s performance regarding the economy, inflation has remained a critical concern for many voters, overshadowing other leadership qualities. His recent announcement of tariffs stirred fears about a trade war, which initially shook financial markets but also saw some recovery as he revised the tariff plans.
Polls reflected a low approval of Trump’s handling of tariffs and inflation, indicating that many people are still feeling the pinch when it comes to everyday living expenses.
Doug Hay, a seasoned GOP strategist, emphasized that the core reason for Trump’s previous electoral success was the expectation of lower prices. However, current polls suggest that prices have not significantly dropped, except for gasoline, leading to dissatisfaction among voters.
Shaw noted that the lack of meaningful price reductions might not be perceived as an economic success. As basic living costs remain high, it appears that Trump’s focus on reducing prices will be crucial for his perceived success moving forward.
