Trump’s plan for self-deportation: Smart idea or a waste of funds? Mark Levin shares his thoughts.

On May 9, President Trump announced a new initiative called “Project Homecoming.” This program offers illegal immigrants a $1,000 scholarship and complimentary flights to leave the U.S. voluntarily.

Additionally, this initiative caused the discontinuation of a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) app that had been altered by the Biden administration in 2023. Initially aimed at allowing immigrants in Mexico to arrange asylum appointments at U.S. border locations, it ultimately became a loophole for illegal immigration due to its “catch and release” policy.

But things have changed with Trump in office.

The previous app, CBP One, has been replaced with a new app called CBP Home, which facilitates self-reporting. This allows illegal immigrants to declare their decision to leave and inform the Department of Homeland Security about their departure, helping agencies track who exits the country.

There’s also an additional opportunity for those who meet other immigration criteria: after waiting ten years, they might apply for legal re-evaluation. However, those who are compelled to leave may face harsher consequences, such as longer waiting periods or even permanent bans.

Critics of the program state that it wastes taxpayer money, but they seem to overlook the numbers or align with radical left views on immigration.

In reality, this initiative reflects another positive action from Trump.

Some detractors claim “Project Homecoming” is wasteful, but Levin counters with financial reasoning. He argues that the deportation process—averaging around $17,000 per individual—is significantly costlier than this program, which runs about $4,000 to $4,500 per person and demands fewer resources. This indicates potential savings for taxpayers in the long run.

And it appears to be effective. Thousands of illegal immigrants have already registered through the “Project Homecoming” initiative, with many more expected to follow.
