As most Americans celebrate Independence Day, an unlikely source of information is New York magazine. published an exposé of the accusations About the “conspiracy of silence to protect” President Joe Biden.
Americans have worried about Biden’s cognitive abilities throughout his presidency, but according to New York magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi, the president’s cognitive decline has been rapid, and in January, Democratic Party leaders, activists and donors began telling shocking stories about the severity of Biden’s decline.
“It’s been bad for a long time, but it’s gotten worse.”
Of course, none of her sources spoke publicly, but she explained that they decided to come forward because they felt “burdened,” “scared” and “horrified” by what they knew.
1. Biden forgets what he shouldn’t forget
As we age, everyone’s memory declines. We lose our ability to remember small details.
But the most powerful commander in chief on the planet has forgotten the name of a “longtime friend of the Biden family,” Nuzzi said.
“People who have encountered the president at social gatherings have sometimes found the interactions confusing.“Longtime friends of the Biden family, who spoke to me on the condition of anonymity, were shocked that the president didn’t remember their names,” she reported.
“At a White House event last year, one guest recalled feeling horrified when he realized the president would not be able to stay for the reception because it was clear he would not make it through,” she wrote. “Guests were unsure whether they would be able to vote for Biden because they were now open to an idea they had previously dismissed as right-wing propaganda — that the president might not be the acting president after all.”
A source who witnessed a recent White House incident — in which First Lady Jill Biden was forced to teach Biden, a major Democratic donor and family friend, how to say “hello” — told Nuzzi that Biden’s decline has worsened exponentially.
“It’s been bad for a long time, but it’s gotten a lot worse,” an eyewitness said. “It’s gotten a lot worse!”
2. You don’t know who’s in charge
The Constitution entrusts Biden with enormous responsibility as the chief executive officer.
But Nuzzi’s sources, also well-connected Democrats, told her they don’t know who actually runs the country.
Interestingly, Nuzzi reported that her sources found themselves in “total agreement” with Donald Trump supporters on ideas that are usually dismissed as conspiracy theories.
She writes:
Who was actually in charge? No one knew. But surely someone was in charge? And if this situation was intolerable, surely there must have been a plan? These questions were asked at cocktail parties along the coasts as well as MAGA rallies across the Midwest. There was a ludicrous overlap between the beliefs of the nation’s most elite liberal Biden supporters and those of former President Trump’s most fervent, conspiracy-addled supporters. Whether they were in the Resistance or QAnon, they shared grand theories about America in 2024. There must be a secret group of government officials who will quickly put into motion a plan to control Biden and replace him as the Democratic presidential nominee. Nothing else made sense, they were in complete agreement.
3. Biden looks lifeless
Nuzzi said the president looks “otherworldly” up close.
“Up close, the president doesn’t seem as real, and not because he’s old. We all know what old looks like. Bernie Sanders is old. Mitch McConnell is old. Most of the establishment is old. The president seemed more otherworldly, more otherworldly,” Nuzzi said.
She came to this conclusion because when she last met with Biden at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, she couldn’t remember her name, even though the president knew her.
“When I reached out to greet the president, my heart nearly stopped. I tried to make eye contact, but his eyes were open. upon,” she wrote.
“His face had the texture of wax. He smiled, and it was a sweet smile, and it made me sadder than I can describe,” she continued. “He held my hand, and I was surprised by its touch. It wasn’t cold, it was cool. It was so warm in the basement, and people were sweating and complaining about being sweaty. This was a silly black-tie gathering. I said, ‘Hello.’ His sweet smile remained frozen. He spoke very slowly, in a very soft voice. ‘So what’s your name?’ he asked.”
Other reporters were meeting with Biden for a photo op that evening, and as he left, Nuzzi reported hearing the reporters “guessing, percentage-wise, how dead Biden looked.”
“Forty percent?” asked one journalist.
4. Biden’s debate performance
The White House, the Biden campaign and Biden himself have acknowledged that he performed poorly in last Thursday’s debate.
But Nuzzi said he came to a different conclusion.
Biden fared much better than expected, based on all the knowledge he gleaned from interviewing Democratic sources for his article.
“[W]My first thought as I watched the President awkwardly walk across the stage was: He doesn’t look that bad. “Some of the things I’ve heard and seen over the past few months have led me to prepare for something much more dire,” Nuzzi acknowledged.
All these stories are being reported only Biden’s disastrous post-debate performance seems to be an indictment of the entire media and political establishment, who seemed to know what was going on behind the scenes but remained silent until Biden’s primetime gaffe and continued to pressure him to run for reelection.
Moreover, these stories raise an important question: Will there be accountability?
Meanwhile, Nuzzi responded to questions about why her story was published about six months after she began writing it.
“Reporting takes time. I started hearing from these sources in January. This story is about a conspiracy of silence that made people unwilling to talk. The reporting process is about speaking to sources, corroborating the information and getting more information to corroborate it. The discussions have changed people’s calculations of how open they can be and what they can go on record with. Most of my stories take months,” she said. explanation.
It’s true: Nuzzi’s corporate journalism-style reporting takes a lot of time, energy and resources, but she’s not the only political journalist with access to the stories and information she exposes.
So the bigger question is, what are the rest of the media’s excuses?
