Federal Raids on Marijuana Farms Spark Backlash
The Trump administration recently faced significant criticism after federal agents conducted raids on two marijuana farms in California. The operation has stirred a mix of reactions, particularly from those on the left.
Authorities from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs Border Patrol carried out the raids at facilities located in Carpinteria and Camarillo based on a criminal warrant.
“As Secretary Noem mentioned, this is becoming one of the largest operations since President Trump took office.”
On Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced details surrounding the sweep, indicating that 361 individuals were arrested, along with the rescue of at least 14 children. These children were reportedly in precarious situations involving potential exploitation and human trafficking.
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott noted that nearly all the children taken from the farms were unaccompanied, with one being as young as 14.
Glass House Farms, the owner of the facilities, confirmed the warrants and insisted that they do not intentionally violate employment laws and do not hire minors.
The DHS has identified some of the detained individuals, including a Mexican national named Rome Izquierdo, who had a history of serious offenses. He had previously been convicted of attempts to commit rape and child abuse, receiving a seven-year prison sentence before being expelled by ICE in 2006.
In addition, other arrests included Mexican national Juan Duarte Velázquez, convicted of rape, and Salvadoran national Jose Orellana, found guilty of DUI and hit-and-run.
The DHS reported that around 500 protesters attempted to disrupt the federal operation on the farms. Four U.S. citizens were reportedly taken into custody for resisting law enforcement.
During the protests, one worker at the Camarillo farm fell to his death from a greenhouse roof. DHS clarified that he was not in custody and had no prior police involvement when the incident occurred.
DHS Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin also highlighted that the raids led to the rescue of children likely facing forced labor and trafficking challenges.
Trump remarked on the violence against federal agents during the protests, claiming that while he was traveling from Texas, he witnessed “thugs” aggressively attacking officers with rocks and bricks. He expressed his support for law enforcement and emphasized the need for stronger action against the riots.
He urged federal authorities to make arrests and ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel, stating he wants to see an end to the violent incidents against them.
