Warren Defends Platner Amid Controversies
Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts recently described Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, as her “kind of guy” during a campaign event, even as he faced criticism regarding tattoos that some interpret as Nazi symbols.
On a Wednesday segment of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” host Sarah Eisen pointed out Platner’s troubling past. Specifically, she referenced his tattoo and controversial statements about personal responsibility related to sexual assault, as well as his reported support for Hamas’ military tactics. Eisen pressed Warren on how she could relate to someone with such a background.
Warren responded by recognizing that Platner had indeed apologized for his past actions. She emphasized that he interacts with the Maine community daily, allowing them to see not just who he was but who he is now.
She further acknowledged, somewhat hesitantly, that she was initially unaware of Platner’s history when supporting him. She read an interview where he reflected on economic crises, referencing the hardships faced by millions during the 2008 financial meltdown. Warren noted that these sentiments resonated with her.
Eisen raised concerns about the Democratic Party’s image, questioning whether it could truly be considered inclusive. Warren reiterated her desire for the party to champion hardworking individuals, focusing on the need to reshape an economy skewed in favor of the wealthy. She expressed her belief that Platner shares this vision, asserting her commitment to support him in that endeavor.
Warren joined Platner at a rally in Portland, Maine, confidently declaring him her “type of person.” As the Democratic primary approaches on June 9, Platner is gearing up to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in the upcoming November election. He’s currently at odds with Maine Governor Janet Mills, who has leveraged Platner’s past controversies in her campaign, including his previous statements about sexual assault and support for Hamas. Despite these issues, Platner has apologized for his tattoo and taken steps to cover it up.
