Zohran Mamdani urges Graham Platner to exit the Maine Senate race

Maine Democratic Candidate Faces Pressure to Withdraw

Maine’s Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, has lost the support of New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, a notable figure in the progressive movement.

Mamdani made his comments during a news conference with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, where he discussed Platner’s campaign following a primary win by his favored candidate over the incumbent. He stated, “I think it’s time for him to withdraw from the race.” Mamdani emphasized his current focus on his endorsements in New York City, where he’s excited about recent electoral victories.

In other developments, the situation escalated when allegations surfaced that Platner had raped his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot. This shocking news has led to a wave of Democrats distancing themselves from Platner. Mamdani, who has never endorsed Platner, is among a growing list of political figures urging him to step back from the Senate race.

Interestingly, Mamdani and Platner share connections through key aides. For example, Morris Katz, who assisted Mayor Mamdani during his successful campaign, also worked with Platner. This overlap highlights the unexpected divide between them.

Senator John Fetterman has openly criticized Bernie Sanders for previously supporting Platner, calling him a “predator” in light of the allegations. Meanwhile, several progressive candidates, including James Talarico from Texas and Abdul El-Sayed from Michigan, have remained silent but are calling on Platner to withdraw.

Despite the growing pressure, Platner has not publicly declared an end to his campaign. In a recent video, he indicated he would take time to reflect on how to proceed, underscoring his commitment to his state and the movement. However, prominent Senate leaders, including Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, have urged him to “immediately withdraw” following the allegations. Interestingly, Senator Bernie Sanders, a key ally to Platner, has not yet commented on the situation, marking a stark contrast from his past support.
