Fauci Faces Questions Amid Controversial Hearing

Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) and Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) challenged Anthony Fauci’s attempt to avoid answering questions during a heated hearing where he continuously invoked the Fifth Amendment to sidestep accountability for his role in the pandemic and various falsehoods directed at the American public.

In his opening remarks before the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Fauci stated that he would not respond to any queries, citing his Fifth Amendment rights. However, Hawley argued that this legal shield was misplaced.

“Let’s be clear about one thing: You can’t claim those Fifth Amendment rights because, as you know, the Supreme Court has clarified for over a century that you can be pardoned,” Hawley stated. He emphasized the case of Brown vs. Walker, suggesting that if Fauci were to be forgiven for any misconduct, he might not fully enjoy that privilege. Hawley remarked on the obvious tension of Fauci’s legal counsel sitting behind him.

“This isn’t just about law or the Constitution. It’s about contempt—for this agency and for the American people,” the Missouri senator stated, implying that Fauci might avoid questions due to his involvement in “terrible things” throughout the pandemic.

Hawley continued, “You benefited financially during this crisis, right? You amassed wealth while millions lost their lives. You did this at the taxpayer’s expense, leveraging federal employees to secure over a million dollars during an ongoing pandemic. Isn’t that questionable?” He urged Fauci to respond.

Moreno also directed a question at Fauci regarding the Fifth Amendment, prompting Fauci to briefly consult his lawyer before again declining to answer straightforward inquiries.

“On the advice of my legal counsel, I respectfully decline to respond based on my Fifth Amendment rights,” Fauci repeated.

When Fauci maintained his silence, Moreno remarked, “No, I’m merely listening.” He then indicated he would pass a copy of the Constitution to help Fauci’s understanding. “Every American should know what it contains. Do you know who authored the Fifth Amendment?” Moreno pressed, but Fauci remained mute.

“So you’re choosing not to know who wrote it or its content? Does that sit well with you?” Moreno inquired. Fauci once again cited his constitutional rights, which seemed to surprise Moreno.
