Trump Announces Measures to Tackle Crime in D.C.
President Donald Trump has stated plans for a press conference on Monday to detail strategies aimed at reducing violent crime in Washington, D.C.
This announcement came after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s comments on Thursday. She mentioned that “President Donald Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens” in a city that’s been “plagued by violent crime for far too long.”
The issue of crime in D.C. gained renewed focus following a disturbing incident involving former Department of Government Efficiency staffer, Edward Coristine, who was involved in an attempted carjacking and subsequent assault.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his concern, stating, “Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control. Local youths and gang members, some as young as 14, 16, and 25, are randomly attacking and mugging innocent citizens, and they know they will likely be released soon. They aren’t worried about law enforcement because they believe nothing will happen to them. But that’s going to change now!”
He continued, “If D.C. doesn’t get its act together quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the city and manage it as it should be. Criminals will know they can’t get away with their actions anymore,” sharing a photo of the injured Coristine from the recent attack.
Trump’s directive for federal law enforcement presence in the city is set for a duration of seven days, with possibilities for extension.
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his warnings, announcing a press conference for the following day.
“We’re having a News Conference in the White House. I’m going to make our Capitol safer and more beautiful than ever before. The homeless need to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We’ll provide places for you, but far from the Capitol. As for the criminals, they won’t need to move; we’re going to put them in jail where they belong,” Trump stated.
He added, “This will happen very quickly, just like with the border. We went from millions coming in to zero within months. This will be even easier—be prepared! There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
The federal agencies involved in these patrol efforts reportedly include personnel from various departments such as Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Capitol Police, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, among others.
In a recent tweet, Trump declared, “On Monday, a Press Conference will be held at the White House which will essentially stop violent crime in Washington, D.C. It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be one of the safest…”
