The start of a new year means tax season is right around the corner.
The deadline to file your 2024 income taxes with the Internal Revenue Service is April 15, 2025. The date the IRS will begin processing returns has not been announced (usually late January). However, the free file-guided tax software will be available on Friday, January 2nd. 10.
Starting January 10, the IRS will begin accepting tax returns through IRS Free File. Free software tools from IRS Free File partners can be accessed below. IRS.gov.
IRS Commissioner Danny Wuerffel said, “The IRS remains committed to our partnership with Free File Inc. to ensure taxpayers have a free and secure option to file their taxes electronically.” . “Taxpayers have multiple filing options, including a trusted tax professional, tax software, Free File, Direct File, or free preparation services through an IRS partner.”
IRS Free File is available to taxpayers with 2024 adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less. This allows taxpayers to prepare and file their returns now and retain them until the start date when they can file electronically. Some free file providers also include state tax return preparation and filing.
Taxpayers with AGI greater than $84,000 will be able to use the free file-fillable form starting January 27th.
