Steve Witkov, the U.S. Peace Mission envoy, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a significant move towards peace during his recent meeting with President Donald Trump. Witkov shared his thoughts during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” where he mentioned he had met with Putin several times in the past.
“We came to an agreement on a more substantial security guarantee,” Witkov explained. He noted that the Russians would formalize a commitment stating they wouldn’t aim to annex more land from Ukraine following a peace deal, ensuring they wouldn’t breach European borders.
Witkov also mentioned that Trump had conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders shortly after the talks. He described the meeting as being clearly regarded as a success.
Bream, the host, pressed Witkov on why Putin didn’t insist on a ceasefire during their discussion. Trump has previously stated that achieving a ceasefire is his top priority, warning of possible consequences if Putin remains resistant.
“The president has consistently advocated for ceasefires,” he added. “We’ve seen numerous achievements in this meeting, transitioning our dialogue towards potential peace agreements. The goal here is ultimately a comprehensive peace deal, and we are discussing security guarantees that are more substantial than previously offered.”
Following the call with Trump, European leaders did not clarify their stance on preferring peace agreements over ceasefires.
In a subsequent remark, Trump underscored their intention to move directly towards the Russian-Ukraine Peace Contract, asserting that it involves more than just a ceasefire.
Leaders expressed their support for Trump’s initiatives aimed at halting violence in Ukraine and bringing about a fair, lasting peace.
Putin characterized his exchange with Trump in Alaska as “very frank,” emphasizing respect for the U.S. administration’s desire for a swift end to military hostilities. He expressed a willingness to seek solutions to all issues through peaceful means.
