Workers discover potential crack in chemical tank that may help resolve GKN situation

California chemical tank situation worsens as governor declares state of emergency

Chemical Emergency at Southern California Aerospace Facility

Emergency crews in Southern California are currently dealing with a chemical situation at an aerospace plant, where they’ve found what seems to be a crack in an unstable tank that might be releasing pressure.

In a video update shared on social media, Orange County Fire Department Interim Chief TJ McGovern mentioned that a specialized team conducted a reconnaissance mission late Saturday night. They visually confirmed what appeared to be a crack, which, if accurate, could mean pressure is being released from the tank at the heart of the incident.

“What they found was that there was a potential crack in the tank that could have released some of the pressure inside the tank,” McGovern stated.

Authorities are still working to verify these observations, and McGovern noted that their management strategy could shift following this new information. He indicated that this revelation might influence their approach to the crisis.

State of Emergency Declared in Orange County

The operation overnight marked one of the first effective close-range inspections since the emergency intensified on Thursday night at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove. Crews are focused on averting a large-scale disaster involving methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable chemical.

The chemical leak was detected at a facility that produces engine structures and components for both military and commercial aircraft.

Previously, officials had warned that the aging tank could fail, potentially releasing thousands of gallons of hazardous materials or leading to an explosion that could trigger other tanks in the vicinity.

While the latest findings may be slightly more promising than originally feared, crew members still caution that the danger isn’t entirely over yet. “We’re not there yet, but this was a step in the right direction,” McGovern remarked.

Ongoing Evacuations

As conditions remain tense, over 40,000 residents are under evacuation orders while authorities keep a close eye on temperature, air quality, and structural integrity around the site.

On Saturday, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Orange County, as crews shift from defensive measures to taking calculated risks aimed at preventing an explosion.

McGovern commended the efforts of the firefighters and hazardous materials teams, emphasizing that public safety is their utmost priority before allowing residents to return home. “We want you back, but we can’t do that until it’s deemed safe,” he said.

Further updates are expected later as engineers and hazardous materials specialists analyze the new findings from the site.
