Tragic Incident at Yonkers School
A 12-year-old boy who suffocated at a New York school has been named, and authorities are probing a potential connection to a popular TikTok challenge.
Jacob Medina, a sixth-grader at Sonia Sotomayor Community School in Yonkers, began choking—possibly on a donut—while walking in the hallway to class on Wednesday morning.
According to Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Anibal Soler Jr., nearby adults quickly intervened when they noticed he was in trouble. “He was actually with an adult when he started showing signs of choking,” Soler Jr. mentioned, highlighting how, within moments, additional adults came to provide emergency assistance.
Despite these efforts, Jacob was pronounced dead after being transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Investigators are examining whether his death is linked to a social media trend known as “One Bite,” where users challenge themselves to eat large quantities in one bite. “We will look into anything related to the TikTok challenge, along with witness accounts,” confirmed Yonkers Police Chief Christopher Sapienza.
However, school officials have emphasized that it’s still uncertain if the challenge impacted the incident.
Authorities are also reviewing Jacob’s medical history, checking for any allergies that could have contributed. Reports suggest he might have purchased donuts at school as part of a fundraiser shortly before he began to choke.
To honor Jacob’s memory, his family placed flowers and candles outside the school on Thursday evening, remembering him as a kind-hearted boy who loved his cousins.
“This young man was a bright light in the building,” Soler Jr. remarked. “Everyone loved him, everyone knew him. He was energy and joy.”
