He’s got some backing.
Eric Adams is drawing support for his reelection campaign as numerous law enforcement unions gathered on the steps of City Hall to show solidarity with the mayor.
The retired NYPD captain used the opportunity to side with police officers and criticized his main electoral opponent, democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, describing him as a potential menace to public safety in New York City.
“You can’t romanticize public safety,” he remarked, underscoring the value of the backing he received from law enforcement. “It means a lot to the men and women here today, standing with me for public safety.”
He stressed their message: “If you become our leader, please don’t send us into battle and disregard us. Let us lead.” This camaraderie comes at a crucial time for Adams, as he navigates a competitive general election this November.
Despite Adams’s efforts, he currently lags behind Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the polls, especially after a setback in last month’s Democratic Primary.
There’s a clear tension, however. Mamdani’s earlier calls for police funding cuts and critical remarks about the purpose of prisons have led to many in law enforcement rallying behind Adams.
Benny Bosio Jr., leader of the Correctional Officers’ Charity Association, voiced concerns over the possibility of returning to the failed strategies of former Mayor Bill de Blasio under Mamdani’s leadership.
“We cannot risk bringing back de Blasio 2.0,” Bosio declared, emphasizing the strength of Adams’ profile during this challenging time.
Adams not only competes with a Democratic field that includes GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa and attorney Jim Walden—who also have their plans to curb crime—but has positioned himself as the candidate with a proven track record, said EU President Lou Turco.
“We have seen methods that actually work,” he added.
However, the data concerning public safety during Adams’ administration presents a mixed picture. Overall crime numbers have risen since his election in 2021, with a reported increase of 29.2% this year alone compared to 2021.
Compared to 2019, crime stands at a 26.5% rise, according to NYPD figures.
While there has been a national downward trend in murders and shootings, local statistics reflect ongoing challenges. Adams has faced scrutiny as one of his police commissioners resigned amid federal investigations and a former top police official launched numerous corruption lawsuits against the department, which is also dealing with staffing issues.
Still, Adams highlighted Jessica Tisch as his fourth police chief, reinforcing confidence in his administration’s direction.
Looking ahead, Adams promised to challenge Mamdani’s proposals, such as the idea of a city-run grocery store, which he warned might harm local businesses. “We can’t let supermarkets go out of business because of government competition,” he stated. Additionally, he asserted that the 700,000 small property owners should be allowed reasonable rent increases to maintain their buildings’ viability.
