Insights from Coach Trey Oliver on Recent Recruitment Issues
North Carolina Central University’s football coach, Trey Oliver, recently shared some intriguing experiences from his time on the sidelines. He mentioned a situation that arose last season involving an assistant coach from the Biriguinea Institute of Technology Hokies.
Oliver suggested that this coach was potentially engaging in unauthorized in-game recruitment. His concerns hinted at a broader strategy to persuade players to explore the transfer portal. It’s somewhat unsettling, to be honest, the lengths people might go to.
He recounted an incident where Virginia Tech seemed to utilize his dual role in a rather audacious manner. “It was quite bold,” Oliver remarked, expressing his disbelief at the situation.
Although he refrained from naming specific players, Oliver noted one running back who later transferred to Virginia. It’s interesting how such dynamics play out; it feels like there’s always more beneath the surface. J’Mari Taylor, who had a stellar record with NCCU, is now part of the UVA roster.
Moreover, Oliver appeared to have a pretty good read on his assistant’s motivations. “I knew what it was,” he said, suggesting an awareness that comes with experience.
In response to Oliver’s remarks, Virginia Tech acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating it was unaware of such issues before. They pledged to investigate the claims, underscoring their commitment to NCAA rules. “This is the first time an issue has caught our attention,” the institution expressed, emphasizing their dedication to addressing any findings properly.
As for the upcoming season, Virginia Tech’s final regular game will be against UVA on November 29. Interestingly, Oliver seems to adopt a cheering role for his former players, expressing enthusiasm about their potential success. “I’m grateful that he went to UVA,” he noted. It’s nice to see that connection between coaches and their players endures beyond the field.
