Texas Man Sentenced for Stalking WNBA Player
Michael Lewis, a 55-year-old from Texas, has been sentenced to over 18 months in prison after he admitted to stalking Indiana Fever basketball player Kate Clark.
His legal troubles began in January when he was arrested at a hotel in Indianapolis. He faced felony stalking charges for allegedly sending threatening and violent messages to Clark through social media.
As part of his sentence, Lewis will spend time at the Marion County Adult Detention Center.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented, “This outcome holds the defendant accountable for the fear and confusion he caused.” He further noted that now, with Lewis in custody for two and a half years, Clark can focus on her career without fear.
Furthermore, Lewis has been ordered to maintain no contact with Clark, stay away from Indiana Fever and Pacers games, and refrain from using the internet as part of his sentence.
Additionally, the judge suggested Lewis seek mental health treatment, stating, “You can’t help yourself until you get help.”
Lewis had reportedly messaged Clark through his social media account, claiming he bought tickets to sit right behind her during a game.
Clark expressed concerns for her safety leading up to Lewis’s visit to Indianapolis, and mentioned she was even considering altering her appearance when going out in public.
When questioned about his messages, Lewis explained he didn’t think they were serious, calling them “fantasy type” or “joking.”
He acknowledged the gravity of the situation by saying, “It takes a lot of courage for a woman to come forward in these cases; so many don’t.”
