Pennsylvania Governor Joins Lawsuit Against Trump’s Order on Gender Surgeries

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro faced significant backlash after signing on to a lawsuit aimed at blocking President Donald Trump’s order that seeks to ban gender surgeries for minors. Shapiro also criticized supporters of a Pennsylvania Senate bill that would prohibit biological men from competing in women’s sports.

While some Democrats view Shapiro’s opposition to Trump’s policies as a positive stance, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily indicate his support for such surgeries. He has mentioned that he believes the federal government should not intervene in matters regarding medical decisions for children.

“I am suing the Trump administration along with 16 other states,” Shapiro stated, “because they threaten unfounded civil investigations and criminal prosecutions against healthcare providers in Pennsylvania. They’re trying to take away medical decisions from parents and communities.” He emphasized that decisions about healthcare should remain between parents, their children, and doctors. “I can’t just stand by while the federal government encroaches upon the rights of Pennsylvania families,” he added.

Despite his reasoning, many members of the state’s Senate GOP expressed discontent. A spokesperson for the Caucus Campaign Committee described Shapiro’s actions as an effort to cater to the radical elements within the Democratic Party, which they claim jeopardizes children’s health.

“It’s clear that Josh Shapiro has political ambitions,” remarked Cody Harbaugh, the executive director of the SRCC.

Shapiro has also critiqued both Trump and potential challengers within his state, like Senator Doug Mastoriano, who co-sponsors a bill aimed at preserving women’s sports by excluding biological men. Mastoriano contends that Shapiro’s claims are indicative of a denial of science and an infringement on women’s rights.

In a similar vein, State Senator Judy Ward has been vocal about her concern that proposed changes threaten the protections given to women under Title IX. Mastoriano, who has stirred some controversy within his own party, is seen as a major contender against Shapiro in the upcoming 2026 elections.

Some figures in the Republican Party have suggested that state treasurer Stacey Garrity could be a viable challenger, reflecting a division on who might best represent their interests in the election.

Shapiro’s public criticism of Trump and Mastoriano hasn’t gone unnoticed. While some Senate Democrats have not pursued the controversial bill, residing members claim they haven’t thoroughly reviewed its implications.

The White House has dismissed the lawsuit that Shapiro joined, labeling it as a reason for declining approval ratings among Democrats. A spokeswoman claimed that the policies advocated by Shapiro and his allies do not resonate with a significant majority of the American public.

“President Trump acted decisively to halt harmful practices that American citizens broadly oppose. The administration is prepared to take further steps to safeguard vulnerable children,” she concluded.

In a complex political landscape, Shapiro’s actions have drawn a mix of support and criticism, showcasing the challenges of navigating controversial topics like this one within a divided party.
