Zelensky Stands Firm on Ukrainian Territory Amid Upcoming Trump-Putin Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized his commitment to reclaiming lands occupied by Russia during the ongoing invasion. This declaration coincides with President Trump’s forthcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin, aimed at resolving the war.
“The Ukrainians deserve peace, but it’s crucial for our partners to grasp what a dignified peace entails,” Zelensky stated in a video message to his citizens. He underscored that the ongoing conflict must end, placing the onus on Russia, which he accused of perpetuating the war by ignoring deadlines. “It’s more than just a problem; it’s a pressing issue,” he added.
In his remarks, Zelensky expressed readiness to collaborate with Trump and other allies for a sustainable peace—one that wouldn’t collapse under Moscow’s influence. His speech came just hours after Trump announced plans to meet Putin in Alaska on August 15.
“A resolution is impossible without Ukraine. We are deeply affected by this furious war in our homeland, and any agreement reached without us simply isn’t valid,” he noted.
Zelensky cautioned that any peace deal reached by the US excluding Ukraine would ultimately fail to yield real benefits. “Decisions made without us are, in essence, decisions against peace. They lead nowhere. They are ill-conceived,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader reflected on Putin’s miscalculations, suggesting the Russian president underestimated the resolve of the Ukrainian people. “Putin’s error was failing to appreciate our strength,” he remarked. “I believe in our resilience. Even among those who side with Russia, there’s an acknowledgment of the wrongdoing taking place.”
The anticipated meeting between Trump and Putin is seen as a pivotal moment to address the conflict that escalated when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Trump, while addressing reporters, confirmed that the Alaska meeting was set for mid-August. “This meeting is vital for both of us, and while safety concerns have delayed us, we aim to resolve them promptly,” he remarked. He seemed eager for the meeting, expressing urgency in wanting to see Putin sooner rather than later.
Ultimately, as both leaders prepare for the summit, the focus remains on finding a viable path to peace amid a backdrop of ongoing conflict and escalating tensions in the region.
