Corporate media appears to be placing the blame for escalating electricity prices on President Donald Trump and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), rather than attributing these changes to Democrats or former President Joe Biden’s assertive green energy policies. There seem to be various reports out there linking Trump’s OBBBA to rising costs, yet data from the Energy Information Bureau shows that electricity bills have already been increasing, particularly during the Biden administration. Experts have expressed concerns that the shift towards green energy could jeopardize grid stability and lead to higher costs as demand continues to grow, notably driven by the expanding AI sector.
Steve Milloy, a senior policy fellow, remarked that electric prices have climbed due to the grid’s reliance on inconsistent renewable sources like wind and solar. He emphasized the need for more reliable energy sources, such as nuclear and fossil fuels, to meet increasing demand. The overarching expectation is that, nationally, electricity prices will surge by 13% from 2022 to 2025, driven by unprecedented consumption levels. This increase in demand is attributed to AI data centers and a resurgence in U.S. industrial activity, all amidst aging energy infrastructure that lacks adequate replacement.
Experts have noted that while promoting green energy technologies, the Biden administration has also imposed stringent regulations on oil, gas, and coal industries, which could contribute to rising costs in some regions. The impact is uneven across different states—some seeing more drastic price hikes than others, particularly in areas heavily regulated for green energy.
Interestingly, despite the Democrats’ climate agenda being linked to these rising costs, mainstream media tends to hold Trump accountable. Recently, it was noted that rising utility bills might significantly influence voter sentiment in upcoming elections, with some suggesting that Republicans might face backlash for contributing to these increases.
In Arizona, despite the implications of OBBBA, utilities are claiming they don’t plan to raise rates. However, APS has recently revised its strategy regarding the use of green technology due to concerns about power grid reliability. Observers argue that the root causes of rising prices need to be identified, as energy transitions away from natural gas and towards stricter clean energy obligations have been associated with cost increases in various regions.
Critics have pointed out that while Democrats have been pivotal in policies affecting electricity pricing, blaming Trump for these trends feels somewhat disingenuous. Historical data indicated a modest rise in electricity prices during Trump’s administration compared to a substantial spike under Biden. The Department of Energy has raised warnings about blackouts potentially increasing dramatically if the maintenance of power plants continues to lag behind demand, highlighting that a mix of energy sources is crucial for the stability of the U.S. electricity grid.
