Efforts Underway to Organize Meeting Between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky as Alaska Summit Approaches

Vance Discusses Tripartite Meeting to End Ukraine War

On Sunday, Vice President JD Vance indicated that the White House has organized a meeting involving President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump is reportedly set to meet with Putin this week, with the aim of finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Efforts to coordinate these crucial discussions are progressing; Vance held talks with representatives from Ukraine, Britain, and other European nations on Saturday. U.S. officials have noted that significant strides have been made toward ending the conflict. Zelensky described the discussions as “constructive,” affirming Ukraine’s backing for all forms of Trump’s previously suggested ceasefire this year.

It seems that Ukrainian officials are expected to attend the meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday, barring any last-minute changes. Trump previously proposed the idea of a “land swap” as part of a peace settlement, a notion that Kyiv rejected without assurances regarding security or weapon commitments.

Mark Latte, NATO’s Executive Director, referred to Friday’s meeting as a “vital test” of Putin’s willingness to truly end the war. German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz expressed concerns about discussions being held “over the heads of Europeans and Ukrainians,” calling such a move “unacceptable.”

During an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday program, Vance commented on the need for careful scheduling of discussions among the three leaders to address the conflict’s resolution. He raised doubts about the wisdom of having Putin and Zelensky meet before they finalize plans for the Alaska meeting.

One major hurdle has been Putin’s previous stance against engaging directly with Zelensky. Meanwhile, U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker highlighted that Zelensky is still considering attending the conference in Alaska, saying, “It’s time to make that decision,” although no decision has yet been made.

Zelensky voiced concerns about Russia’s ongoing aggression, noting, “despite issuing deadlines, they continue to escalate hostilities and seek an advantageous position for future strikes. We must stop these destructive actions.” He reiterated that Ukraine is ready to collaborate effectively with all partners seeking genuine peace, emphasizing the importance of Ukrainian involvement in any negotiations.

Vance also indicated his resistance to ongoing U.S. financial support for Ukraine’s defense, stating that it should enable Ukraine to purchase arms from American manufacturers. However, the administration remains committed to providing direct financial backing.

“America, we have finished funding the Ukrainian War project,” Vance insisted. “We want to achieve peaceful reconciliation and halt the violence, but I think Americans are weary of continuing to finance this conflict with their taxes.”

The agreement reached between the Trump administration and NATO in July involved allies purchasing air defense systems, missiles, and ammunition for Ukrainian forces.

The Alaska Summit is set to take place on Friday, marking the first meeting between U.S. and Russian leaders since the 2019 G20 Summit.
