Putin commends 'genuine' Trump, suggests a nuclear arms agreement between Russia and the US might be possible

Russian President Vladimir Putin has commended the efforts of the Trump administration to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, noting a certain enthusiasm in their approach.

He expressed hope that discussions between Moscow and Washington could pave the way for lasting peace, stating that these talks might help stabilize not just their nations but potentially benefit Europe and the globe.

“The current American administration seems to be genuinely trying to halt the fighting, solve the crisis, and arrive at a mutually beneficial agreement for all parties involved,” said Putin.

He added that a peace agreement could be achievable if the U.S. and Russia manage to reach an accord regarding the control of strategic offensive weapons.

The U.S. and Russia had previously signed the New START treaty in 2011, which aimed to limit the deployment of strategic nuclear arms.

This treaty is set to expire on February 5, 2026.

However, following President Putin’s declaration earlier this year that Russia would cease compliance with certain treaty obligations, New START has faced significant challenges, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine.

Putin’s track record raises concerns about his reliability, with many viewing him as a skilled manipulator.

Former President Trump has voiced his frustrations with the Russian leader, suggesting that he’s grown increasingly annoyed with him, often referring to instances where he feels Putin has been disingenuous.

“If we wanted to know the truth, we were manipulated by Putin,” Trump remarked recently, expressing disbelief at the charm sometimes displayed by the Russian leader, ultimately deeming it inconsequential.
