European Leaders Trust Trump's Negotiation Skills Before Meeting with Putin

European Leaders Approach Trump Ahead of Putin Summit

On Friday, European leaders took the initiative to discuss President Donald Trump’s upcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, set for Thursday. Figures like German Prime Minister Frederick Merz and Latvian Prime Minister Ebika Syria shared insights about a call that took place between Trump and European leaders.

During this call, it seems Trump expressed some willingness to examine territorial issues, although it’s unclear how far he’s willing to go. It appears he’s primarily interested in gauging Putin’s intentions for the future.

“We’re all aligned,” Syria remarked. “President Trump has a unique negotiating style, and I believe he’s striving for the best possible outcomes from these discussions.”

Merz also suggested that Trump “generally aligns” with European leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Council of Europe President Antonio Costa. There’s a shared hope among them for constructive dialogue.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials are apprehensive that Trump might concede to some of Putin’s demands during the summit. However, a Wednesday call reportedly helped ease those concerns for some leaders. There’s also some admiration for Vice President JD Vance, who has been portrayed as actively seeking solutions while emphasizing the negative role of Putin.

Putin has indicated that he might consider a ceasefire in Ukraine if Kiev relinquishes control of the largely Russian-speaking Donbas region. Yet, Ukraine remains firmly against such concessions.

Prior to the summit, Russia managed to gain ground in the Donetsk area within Donbas.

Since taking office in January, Trump has brokered several peace deals globally, including a significant agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia on August 8.

As of now, the White House has not issued any comments regarding this matter.
