Illinois governor approves legislation granting financial aid to all residents, including those without legal status.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a prominent figure in the Democratic party and rumored to be eyeing a presidential run, has enacted a new law extending financial aid to all residents, including those without legal immigration status. This decision has drawn criticism from conservative figures like Rep. Mary Miller, who argues it undermines support for Illinois families and students.

The legislation seeks to create “equity in eligibility for financial aid and benefits” for all students across the state.

It specifies that “students who reside in Illinois and are otherwise ineligible for federal financial aid will be able to qualify for financial assistance.” This includes transgender students who have been disqualified due to registration issues or non-citizen students lacking legal permanent residency.

Democratic State Sen. Serena Villanueva, one of the bill’s advocates, praised Pritzker, stating the goal is to ensure that no student is disadvantaged due to their birthplace.

Villanueva’s office indicated that the legislation is meant to simplify what had been a confusing set of rules that excluded undocumented students and those from mixed-status families from essential aid.

According to the office’s statement, the law pertains to students who reside in Illinois and qualify for state, local, or public university financial aid programs.

Villanueva emphasized that the law is part of her ongoing efforts to support immigrants and first-generation students, aiming for a more coherent approach to accessing educational support.

She remarked, “If you live in Illinois and are pursuing higher education, you should have the same opportunities as everyone else. Illinois invests in all our students and is dedicated to their success.”

In response to the new law, Miller expressed her concerns to Fox News Digital, asserting that allowing financial aid for undocumented individuals is an insult to hardworking families in Illinois.

“Our state is already in debt, yet Governor Pritzker continues to allocate taxpayer money to reward those who are here illegally,” she stated, calling the situation “absolutely shameful.”

An Illinois GOP spokesperson echoed Miller’s sentiments, insisting that the governor prioritizes illegal immigrants over the needs of Illinois families.

They added, “Taxpayers should not have to finance benefits for individuals who shouldn’t even be here.”

Pritzker’s office did not provide comments when approached by Fox News Digital for a statement regarding the reaction to the law. Villanueva’s office had also not responded by the time of publication.
