Tim Waltz Critiques Media Coverage of Democratic Party Divisions

Former Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz has expressed his frustration with the media for focusing on perceived divisions within the Democratic Party, especially during a time when President Donald Trump is labeling the nation as experiencing a “fascist” takeover.

Waltz delivered an impassioned speech on Monday at the summer strategy meeting of the Democratic Party in Minneapolis, where leaders are attempting to unify a party grappling with internal conflicts.

During his address, Waltz, a progressive who was once a running mate of Kamala Harris in 2024, remarked on the losses faced in that election, stating, “We all know. [Harris] would have made a fantastic president.” He went on to emphasize that they were waking up each day, not to “nonsense,” but with a sense of purpose and leadership grounded in compassion and vision.

He reiterated some of the bolder positions of the Democratic Party, saying, “We’re not straying from what we should do; we should diversify our goals and aspirations.” Even though he affirmed party platforms, he criticized the media for portraying the Democrats as embroiled in conflict, urging his fellow party members to resist being provoked.

Waltz highlighted, “In the midst of a military takeover of my city and other areas, and the assault on the rule of law, the media seems focused on our internal issues.” He insisted that while healthy discussions are crucial, the party cannot afford to squabble, particularly with their party in the White House. The crowd responded with enthusiasm.

He asserted that Democrats are “strong because we are accountable,” but lamented the ease with which people can turn to Republican ideals, jokingly referencing how simple it is to don a red hat and adopt certain rhetoric.

Waltz accused Trump of enacting policies that are akin to “fascism,” urging that it’s essential to name such tactics for what they are. Regarding Trump’s executive order against flag burning, he criticized the president for prioritizing superficial issues over more pressing concerns.

He concluded his remarks with a call to action, urging Democrats to strive for a “better future” that values all individuals, where children are supported, and immigrants are honored. Waltz emphasized a vision of a society that promotes fair distribution and eases life for everyone.
