Trump Highlights Crime Focus for 2026 Midterms

During a cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump expressed his belief that crime will be a central theme in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. This, he noted, aligns with his ongoing support for a controversial initiative referred to as “federalization” in Washington, D.C.

When asked about this initiative, Trump mentioned using the DC Home Rules Act to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops in the capital. He indicated that similar efforts are necessary in various Democratic-led cities, like Chicago.

“I think crime will be a big deal,” Trump remarked, although his comments lacked clarity and were somewhat vague. He stated, “Republicans are the party who want to stop crime. We are against crime.”

He went on to assert that “Democrats like crime,” but didn’t elaborate much on that point.

His focus seems to be on cities governed by Democrats, threatening recently to send the National Guard to “cleanse” Chicago. However, whether he can actualize this plan remains uncertain, as it might provoke significant legal hurdles.

Trump commented on the achievements of the previous 12 days of his federalization efforts, expressing a sense of disbelief at the progress made. He then pivoted to other issues, suggesting that Democrats exhibit weakness in areas such as border security and transgender rights.

These statements reflect Trump’s broader defense of his “federalization” strategy, which began about 12 days ago. This strategy includes taking temporary control of city police and utilizing national security forces in D.C.

As he wrapped up his remarks, Trump stated confidently, “If I were a Democrat, the governor or mayor, anyone — I would call President Trump and say, ‘We need your help.’ This will be very safe. It will be the safest place on the planet.”
