Ukrainian President Critiques Summit Between Trump and Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his concerns regarding the recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former President Donald Trump. In a Sunday interview with ABC’s Martha Radatz, Zelensky remarked that the meeting in Alaska was skewed in favor of Moscow.

“It’s unfortunate Ukraine was not part of this discussion. I believe President Trump gave Putin what he aimed for,” Zelensky stated during the interview.

The summit, held on August 15, marked the first time since 2007 that Putin visited the United States outside the context of the United Nations.

The hope was that this meeting could pave the way for a ceasefire agreement and foster a peaceful coexistence between Ukraine and European nations post-Putin’s invasion.

Reports suggest Putin appeared visibly annoyed as he faced down reporters during the session with Trump.

Trump had previously made it clear that he wouldn’t negotiate on Ukraine’s borders but mentioned that any territorial concessions would need Zelensky’s agreement. Leading up to the summit, Trump also supported European calls for Ukraine’s security guarantees. However, despite the buildup of anticipation, no consensus was reached between the two leaders.

Throughout the discussions, Trump indicated that several points were mutually agreeable. However, he noted that without a formal deal in place, no trade could occur.

While not officially endorsing a ceasefire, Putin acknowledged Ukraine’s security assurances during a press conference, referring to the talks as “constructive.” “As he mentioned today, President Trump agrees that Ukraine should indeed be secure. We are ready to work on that,” Putin declared.

Zelensky’s relationship with Trump has been marked by ups and downs since Trump took office, particularly during a controversial exchange involving Zelensky and Senator JD Vance. However, a meeting on August 18 seemed to shift the dynamics toward a more amicable tone.

When questioned about the possibility of a meeting with Putin in Moscow, Zelensky dismissed the idea. He suggested that if Putin wished to meet while the war remains ongoing, it should happen in Kyiv instead.

The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments on the developments surrounding the summit.
