Portland Mayor Rejects Federal Intervention
Portland’s Mayor, Keith Wilson, has turned down President Donald Trump’s suggestion to send federal forces to the city, despite ongoing protests outside federal immigration facilities. In a recent statement, Wilson expressed, “Like other mayors across the country, I don’t want federal intervention—and I don’t think it’s needed.” This came after Trump’s proposal to deploy the National Guard to Portland.
According to reports, the mayor’s decision follows accusations against demonstrators at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building, which include attacks on federal officials. Notably, the Cottonwood School of Civics and Science was relocated over the summer due to safety concerns regarding chemicals and crowd control projectiles. The school was situated close to the ICE facility.

Trump described his experience in Portland as a “live in hell” scenario and has previously contemplated sending federal forces to cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, and Memphis. He has already deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
Violent crime in Portland has reportedly dropped, showing a 51% decline in the first half of this year compared to 2024. However, tensions remain outside ICE facilities, where nightly confrontations continue, with witnesses reporting the use of pepper balls by officers to control the crowd.
Residents living in nearby apartments have voiced their frustrations over the disturbances. One tenant has even filed a lawsuit against the city, claiming that the noise from bullhorns and “pierced whistle-type sounds” has damaged their eardrum. A local 10-year-old, Rick Stype, mentioned he feels compelled to escort his neighbors outside due to fears of harassment from the protesters. “I just want them to leave us alone,” Stype shared. “I want them to be gone.”
