Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson urges the Education Department to look into an Iowa high school after it observes 'Bisexual Plus Awareness Week'

Controversy Over School Announcement on Bisexual Awareness

Republican Representative Ashley Hinson recently sparked some considerable debate after she commemorated “Bisexual Awareness Week” on a student-run television program at her 14-year-old son’s Iowa high school.

On Friday, Hinson sent a letter to Linda McMahon at the Education Office, calling for an investigation into Linn-Mar High School in Marion. She objected to what she described as “inappropriate” segments being broadcast to students without parental consent.

In her letter, Hinson remarked, “The messages aim to combat biphobia, with students donning bisexual pride pins, learning about bisexuality, and reflecting on the experiences of bisexual individuals.” This information was shared on X by a daily news source.

Hinson called on the U.S. Department of Education to start looking into the matter. She argued that these segments were shared with students without any parental knowledge. As both a parent and a legislator, she emphasized the importance of parental involvement in teaching children about sexual identity.

A morning announcement earlier that week spotlighted inclusivity, with students explaining the concept of “non-monosexual identity.”

A student in the segment mentioned, “Non-monosexual identity encompasses sexual orientations that aren’t simply gay or heterosexual.”

This concept includes various identities like bisexual, pansexual, and others, illustrating a departure from traditional binary understandings of sexual orientation.

Hinson criticized the school district for exposing children to ideologies that might clash with their families’ beliefs. She referenced an executive order signed by Trump, which aimed at restricting federal funding for agencies that teach gender ideology or critical race theory.

In her letter, she expressed appreciation for the Trump administration’s stance on empowering parents in their children’s education, labeling the situation as one of indoctrination. “Parents must be aware, engaged, and active in every facet of their child’s education,” she wrote, insisting that there be accountability for the situation at Linn-Mar.

The Linn-Mar Community School District has stated that it is currently reviewing the circumstances surrounding the production and broadcast of the segment.

They reassured the community that they remain dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive environment in accordance with district policies.
