Convicted Sex Offender Allegedly Assaults Students in Arizona School
A convicted sex offender, recently released from prison, is accused of sexually assaulting students at an Arizona elementary school while impersonating a doctor. This has understandably caused outrage among parents and the community.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, Abel Kai Gubra, 25, faces charges of sexual assault and kidnapping. He reportedly entered the grounds of Orangewood Elementary School, posing as a doctor, and lured students into a classroom on November 19.
When the police were summoned by the school administrators, they discovered that an unauthorized male had indeed entered and allegedly assaulted a young girl. It was stated that the girl managed to push him away at one point, allowing him to escape before officers arrived.
Court documents reveal that Gubra pretended to be a doctor to gain the attention of the student, saying he needed to see her.
After fleeing the scene, police eventually tracked him down, finding him in custody on various charges. Just two weeks prior, Gubra had been released after serving time for similar offenses, and he is also under suspicion for involvement in human smuggling activities.
A prosecuting attorney noted that Gubra faced convictions in 2021 for sexual misconduct involving minors, making his recent actions even more alarming.
The Washington Elementary School District reported that school officials quickly contacted 911 and placed the school on lockdown for over an hour when the incident was reported. The district stated that Gubra was on campus for about ten minutes, during which he had inappropriate contact with a student. Interestingly, Gubra had attended this school himself as a student between 2012 and 2015.
Initially, it was thought that Gubra entered through a door behind a student, but further investigations revealed that he accessed the building through an unlocked lobby door.
As a result of the incident, one staff member has been placed on administrative leave, and the school’s principal expressed concern, stating they are reviewing their safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Currently, Gubra is being held on a bail of $500,000, with a preliminary hearing set for December 1.
