Changes to National Park Admission Fees Announced
The Trump administration has introduced a significant change to the admission pricing for U.S. national parks, under the “America First Admissions Policy.” This marks a notable shift in how fees for visitors to the National Park System are structured.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), starting in January 2026, the annual pass for both U.S. citizens and international travelers will see some revisions. For Americans, the fee remains set at $80 for the “America the Beautiful Pass,” which provides access to both national parks and other federal lands. However, the cost for non-residents, aimed at international tourists, has risen to $250. Additionally, there will be eight designated “free days” throughout the year, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Flag Day, but these free entries apply only to U.S. citizens; foreign visitors will still need to pay the full price.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that these policies aim to ensure that U.S. taxpayers, who already financially support the National Park System, have continued affordable access. In contrast, international tourists are expected to contribute fairly to the maintenance of national parks for future generations.
This policy adjustment is a response to the pressing needs of the parks, which face a $23 billion maintenance backlog alongside revenue shortfalls resulting from government shutdowns and staffing issues at entrance stations. The DOI estimates that the new pricing will generate around $90 million in additional revenue, which would help address deteriorating infrastructure — think roads, bridges, and visitor facilities. It’s essential to avoid placing further burdens on American taxpayers stemming from federal mismanagement.
While some argue that admissions should be free for Americans, this shift towards more affordable access compared to foreign tourists could be seen as a positive move. There’s hope that it will inspire more American families to plan road trips and visit these iconic national parks, rich in history and natural beauty.
