Suspect in Shooting Deaths of National Guardsmen Identified

The individual arrested for the shooting that resulted in the deaths of two National Guardsmen near the White House is an Afghan national who came to the United States only four years ago. Reports indicate that the suspect is 29-year-old Rahmanullah Rakanwar, who arrived under the Biden administration’s Operation Welcoming Allies after the evacuation from Afghanistan.

Law enforcement’s response to the incident in Washington, D.C. was extensive. Initially, it was reported that the soldiers had succumbed to their injuries, but later information from the FBI clarified that they were critically hospitalized.

In a statement, a notable figure declared, “The person who shot and killed the two National Guardsmen was also seriously injured and is currently in two hospitals, yet he will face significant consequences regardless.” This reflects the overall sentiment regarding accountability for such actions.

Sources indicate that a handgun was used in the attack. Eyewitness reports suggest that the shooting occurred just before 2:15 p.m., with one correspondent detailing they were in an Uber nearby when they heard several gunshots. The area was quickly placed on lockdown, and the Secret Service responded to secure the scene.

In a social media address, former President Donald Trump also commented on the situation, emphasizing his support for the National Guard and expressing condolences for the fallen soldiers.

In response to the shooting, Pete Hegseth from the Army Corps announced that an additional 500 National Guard troops will be dispatched to D.C. “This event only strengthens our determination to ensure the safety and security of Washington, D.C.,” Hegseth noted, acknowledging the ongoing challenges posed by violence against service members.

As the investigation continues, it’s clear that this tragic incident has reignited discussions on safety measures and the protection of military personnel in the nation’s capital.
