The Department of Homeland Security recently announced it would review a substantial number of imported refugees, citing concerns over inadequate vetting of many migrants who were reportedly forced back to their home countries.
Activists have welcomed these efforts, which are seen as a way to mitigate risks associated with previous administration policies. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem noted that there was a case in which a member of a large group of Afghan migrants, admitted into the U.S. in 2021, was involved in a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of two National Guard members.
In light of these events, Sarah Beckstrom from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced a halt in processing immigration applications for Afghan nationals to reassess security and vetting processes.
Former President Donald Trump has signaled intentions to take action beyond merely suspending immigration applications. He stated he wants to stem immigration from less developed parts of the world, eliminate non-citizens who are, in his view, unproductive, and denaturalize individuals deemed a security threat.
In a social media post, Trump lamented that the U.S. was being ridiculed globally for its immigration policies, calling it politically correct at the expense of national security.
He referenced recent census data indicating that the immigrant population is projected to reach 53.3 million by January 2025, which he claims contributes to various social issues in America, including high crime rates, failing schools, and housing shortages.
Pointing to Minnesota as a key example, Trump alleged that the influx of Somali refugees is straining the state’s resources and creating safety concerns. He described the streets as unsafe, attributing this to gangs, and criticized local leadership for inaction.
Trump expressed his determination to revoke Somalia’s temporary protectorate status, pointing to concerns of alleged fraud within the Somali community in Minnesota, including welfare funds possibly being misappropriated to support terrorism.
In a notable reaction, Representative Ilhan Omar voiced her discontent with Trump’s comments, asserting that the government should listen to and support Somali-Americans.
However, Trump declared in a Thanksgiving message his commitment to resolving what he sees as immigration issues, stating his plans to stop immigration from Third World countries and remove those he believes do not support America.
He concluded that reversing immigration would be essential to solving these problems, thanking those who uphold American values while warning those perceived as detrimental to the country’s ethos. Meanwhile, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has highlighted that countries of concern include Afghanistan, Somalia, and several others, as outlined in President Trump’s reminder about ongoing risks related to national security.
