Two Iowa National Guard Soldiers Killed in Syria Attack
Officials have confirmed the identities of two soldiers from the Iowa National Guard who lost their lives in a recent counterterrorism operation in Syria. They were Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar. The incident occurred over the weekend and has been linked to individuals associated with ISIS, according to President Donald Trump.
Additionally, a civilian interpreter, Ayad Sakat, also fell victim during the attack, as reported by his family. The details surrounding the attack are stirring emotions, and whilst three other soldiers were injured, the president mentioned they are now recovering well.
In a message on Truth Social, Trump expressed condolences, stating, “We mourn the loss of three great American patriots, two soldiers, and a civilian interpreter in Syria.” He also noted the need for a robust response, mentioning that the attack happened in a volatile region not fully under the control of Syrian authorities, indicating that President Ahmed al-Shalah is understandably upset about the incident.
Army Secretary Pete Hegseth shared that the gunman was neutralized by allied forces in the area. Howard’s stepfather, Jeffrey Bunn, who leads the Meskwaki Police Department, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. He described the difficult visit from an Army official informing them of their son’s death as something no parent should have to face. “Our son Nate was one of those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for all of us,” he said, conveying their grief and urging prayers for all soldiers in such challenging times.
Howard, at 29, was remembered as a dedicated soldier with a lifelong ambition to serve. His biological father, Brian Howard from Colorado, is similarly crushed by the news, according to Bunn. The family shared that Howard was a committed Christian, married, and had a younger brother also serving in the Iowa National Guard.
Torres Tovar, 25, was also acknowledged by his father, and Major General Stephen Osborne of the Iowa National Guard recognized both men for their commitment and service. In a heartfelt statement, he said they represented the best of Iowa’s National Guard family.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the soldiers. She expressed gratitude for their service and offered condolences to the families, urging the community to come together in support during this heartbreaking time.
