Montessori School Founder Arrested on Child Exploitation Charges
The founder and director of a recently established K-12 Montessori school in Illinois has been taken into custody on allegations of child grooming and exploitation.
On January 9, Effingham Police swiftly apprehended Dakota “Cody” Czerwonka, 32, from Montrose, after receiving a report regarding inappropriate electronic communications directed at a student from Crossroads Montessori School. The police confirmed that Czerwonka was “immediately identified” as the suspect.
Czerwonka had previously made an unsuccessful bid for the Illinois House of Representatives in 2020, campaigning on issues such as environmental and LGBTQ+ justice.
Details surrounding the case remain limited, but court documents indicate that Czerwonka faces charges of grooming and exploitation of a child under 13, along with self-exposure, all classified as fourth-degree felonies. He is set to appear in court again on January 29.
Prosecutors have sought to deny his release from pretrial detention, asserting that Czerwonka poses a “real and present threat to the community and to the minor victims,” and arguing that “no condition or combination of conditions can be mitigated” to ensure safety.
Effingham police expressed support for his continued pretrial detention, with Police Chief Curt Davis stating, “After reviewing the incident, our officers immediately identified a very real safety risk and executed the arrest, thereby eliminating any further opportunity for this individual to have contact with other students or children. I am extremely pleased with their efforts.”
The law firm representing Czerwonka did not respond to requests for comment.
In addition to his political activism, Czerwonka has a history of far-left political engagement, supporting figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on social media. In an online post, he mentioned feeling “pegged as a pedophile sympathizer” for endorsing the controversial film “Cuties,” which has faced criticism for its themes.
Crossroads Montessori School, which had its inaugural opening last fall, previously highlighted Czerwonka’s passion for authentic Montessori education in a Facebook introduction, depicting him as committed to fostering a student-centered environment. The school did not respond to inquiries for comment.
