Team USA's Taylor Heise shares her thoughts on American pride at the Winter Games

Gold Medal Glory for Team USA in Women’s Ice Hockey

In a thrilling overtime matchup at the Winter Olympics, Taylor Heise made a pivotal play during the gold medal game against Canada. After passing the puck to Megan Keller, Heise dashed toward the bench, unsure of what would unfold next. “I skated as fast as I could,” she reflected later. “As I was almost to the bench, that’s when I saw everyone jumping. I thought, ‘Wait, did she just score?’ So I turned around and saw it.”

Heise couldn’t believe Keller’s bold move in such a high-pressure moment. “She’s so talented and can pull off plays like that with such grace,” Heise added. Following the goal, the team erupted in celebration, marking their first gold medal in women’s ice hockey since 2018, and the third in Olympic history.

Describing the euphoric moment, Heise said, “It was definitely a relief. When I hit the ice, throwing my glove up in the air, it was like, yes, we did it! It wasn’t just relief in terms of doubt; it was more about accomplishing what we set out to achieve.”

The sound of “The Star-Spangled Banner” played after their win resonated deeply with her. Discussing this special moment, Heise expressed its significance during her postgame remarks. “Wearing the U.S. emblem means so much. You have to remind yourself why you’re playing. It’s a kid’s sport, and being here at this level is incredible.”

Furthermore, Heise cherished the support from home, particularly messages from former players who understand the spirit of the game. As she looks ahead, Heise is excited about continuing with the Minnesota Frost in the Women’s Professional Hockey League (PWHL) and returning to the ice to play again. “We’re set to face Montreal Victoire on March 1st,” she noted.

With the gold medal game attracting millions of viewers, Heise believes it will help attract new fans to women’s hockey. “It’s pretty amazing that so many people tuned in. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just saw us on the biggest stage, it’s an exciting time for the PWHL.”

In a lighthearted moment, she joked about maybe taking a vacation in Mexico, but quickly noted how eager she and her teammates are to return to competitive play. “It’s like looking back at how the WNBA started. There’s a long journey ahead, but this feels special,” she said, alluding to the challenges faced in promoting women’s sports.
