Community Comes Together for Crossing Guard
In Texas, a group of caring fathers recently came together to raise almost $7,000 in just under a week to buy a new car for a beloved elementary school crossing guard after her vehicle broke down.
Trecia Crawford, who works at Moss Haven Elementary, has struggled to get to her job since her car stopped working last October. She faced the challenge of taking Lyft rides and then catching a bus to work because, as she put it, she “ran out of money.”
Through all this, Crawford maintained her positive attitude and continued to show up for her kids each day. “I had to do what I had to do,” she remarked, highlighting her commitment.
Not everyone in the community was aware of her situation. However, once the school’s Fathers’ Club found out, they quickly started a campaign to assist her, managing to raise around $6,800 in less than a week.
One parent, Luke Wagner, shared that the club is focused on enhancing the environment for students and teachers, often working closely with Crawford to ensure everything flows smoothly during morning drop-offs.
Crossing guards play an essential role in maintaining order during busy school hours, helping students and their parents navigate through hectic streets while remembering everyone’s names.
“Sometimes I have to remind them not to run in the crosswalk,” Crawford noted, emphasizing the importance of safety with a smile.
It took several months for the Fathers’ Club to gather enough funds for a new vehicle. Marcus Weiser and Adam Tharp, key members of this effort, led the fundraising initiative. Tharp, who manages a local auto repair shop, managed to purchase a white Jeep for Crawford at a significantly reduced rate and even offered several free oil changes as part of the deal. The leftover funds covered her car insurance, as detailed in a blog post.
This month, the Dads Club finally presented Crawford with the vehicle, which left her emotional and grateful, wiping away tears as they celebrated together.
This was not the first instance of the club stepping up for Crawford. Back in May 2023, after an accident that damaged her car and left her with minor injuries, they organized a GoFundMe campaign to support her financially during a tough time, also serving as an end-of-year gift. They expressed their gratitude for her dedication, saying, “She has faithfully helped us care for our children, so now let’s help care for her!” That endeavor raised nearly $5,000.
