President Donald Trump has urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York is pushing for a compromise amid fears that Republicans could dismantle procedural protections.
On Thursday morning, Trump expressed on Truth Social that “Chuck Schumer, a desperate, lame politician who has lost control of the radical left Democrats, will make a deal now because he thinks the Republicans will end the filibuster if they don’t. Deal or no deal, that’s what Republicans need to do!!!”
He reiterated his call to “Cancel the filibuster!” in another post.
Trump’s remarks come at a time when the Department of Homeland Security has been underfunded for over a month, causing chaos in airport security lines, with TSA workers facing pay delays that have led some to resign or file complaints.
“When will it be ‘enough, enough’ for our Republican senators?” he asked, adding that it’s time to do what should have been done long ago: cancel the filibuster and ensure smooth operations at airports. He also urged for the inclusion of certain legislative items, calling on them to “go for the gold!!!”
If Republicans were to eliminate or lessen the filibuster, they could push their legislative agenda forward with a simple majority, bypassing the need for Democratic support to reach the 60 votes required to end debate.
Fox News Digital reached out to Schumer’s office but has not received a response as of yet.
