Trump Weighs Options for Iran Deal
President Trump is exploring ways to pressure Iran’s new government into reaching a deal to halt ongoing hostilities.
The conflict has now stretched into its fourth week, and Trump has assured the American public that the U.S. is engaged in “serious talks” with what he describes as Iran’s “more rational” new leadership to conclude the war. Although he claimed there had been significant advancements, he did not hesitate to threaten the destruction of critical Iranian facilities if an agreement is not achieved soon.
He said, “This will be retribution for many of our soldiers.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The United States is in serious talks with a new, more rational administration to end military operations in Iran.”
In his message, he added, “While great progress has been made, if we cannot reach an agreement soon—and the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately ‘opened for business’—we will intentionally wrap up our wonderful ‘sojourn’ in Iran by obliterating the power plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island that we have not yet ‘touched’—and perhaps even all desalination plants!”
Since negotiations began last week, the U.S. has deliberately avoided attacking these facilities. Initially, Trump had set a five-day deadline for an agreement but later extended it by an additional ten days.
He emphasized that the planned airstrike would serve as “retaliation” for the lives lost due to the Iranian regime.
“This is retaliation for the many soldiers and others that Iran massacred during the previous regime’s 47-year ‘reign of terror,’” he stated.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the sensitive nature of the negotiations, opting not to reveal the identities of the new negotiators due to fears they might face repercussions in Iran. “I’m not going to reveal who these people are because it could get us into trouble with other groups inside Iran. If there are those willing to take the country in a different direction considering everything that has happened, that would be fantastic,” he remarked.
