Mullin warns against blocking flights to sanctuary cities due to Democratic interference with ICE

Mullin’s Policy Shift on Immigration and Sanctuary Cities

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has sparked criticism from liberals and travel industry supporters by proposing a new approach aimed at preventing illegal immigration into U.S. sanctuary cities.

In a recent interview with Sean Hannity on Fox News, Mullin mentioned he’s “currently developing plans” to suspend processing for international passenger and cargo flights at airports that serve sanctuary jurisdictions. This announcement comes as Democrats allegedly interfere with the work of Homeland Security in immigration detention facilities. Notably, Newark, New Jersey, has been highlighted recently.

He expressed frustration, questioning, “They don’t want us to force immigration, but do they want us to process immigration in their facilities?” Mullin contended that “local radical left Democrats do not allow us to do our jobs and enforce federal law,” suggesting that there should be no international flights to these cities.

While Mullin didn’t specify which cities or airports would be affected, a list released by the Department of Justice last year identified numerous ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’, including California, Connecticut, and Cook County in Illinois, as well as cities like Boston, Denver, and San Francisco.

Opposition from the travel industry has been strong against Mullin’s proposed policy. The U.S. Travel Association and several major airlines issued a joint statement, warning that implementing such a plan could have “devastating consequences for the travel industry and communities that rely on international visits.” Another industry group, Airlines for America, noted that a reduction in Customs and Border Protection presence at airports would lead to “significant operational disruptions for airlines, travelers, and international cargo flows.”

Interestingly, reactions within Trump’s administration are not uniform. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy voiced concerns during a congressional hearing, stating he was wary of limiting air travel based on political disagreements. “We have people from all over the world and all over the country who need to fly to all kinds of places,” he noted. He questioned the rationale behind imposing travel restrictions in states that don’t align with specific political views.
